Which Golf Clubs Are For You?

By: Lee MacRae

With so many different makes and types of golf clubs on the market, it is no wonder beginners, let alone the more experienced golfer, can become easily confused when it comes to buying clubs.

Follow along as we discuss each type and what may be best for you.

First, are you between five and six feet tall? Then standard clubs will most likely work for you. That goes every bit for both men and women. If you are outside those parameters, then you may need to look at custom fitted clubs.

Cast or forged iron clubs. Which?

For most folks, the standard cast iron golf clubs are the best way to go.

Why, you ask? Well, cast iron golf clubs normally have a bigger "sweet spot". The trem refers to the best area on the club face that will give you the maximum range and accuracy on a shot. The larger "sweet spot" you have, the less likely it is that you will hit a bad shot You can still be a little "off center" and the ball is still struck well because you have a larger margin of error. This makes cast iron clubs ideal for anyone who wants a more consistant shot., especially beginners. Without a steady consistant swing, a larger striking area will produce better shots overall. That is why clubs like "Big Bertha" came on the market. The large oversized head obviously gives a much larger sweet spot than a normal driver. Average golfers get longer and straighter drives on a more consistant basis.

Conversely, forged iron golf clubs have a much smaller sweet spot and it is far more difficult to hit a ball well with this kind of club.

So why even make golf clubs out of forged iron, you ask?

For a very simple reason. Cast iron is a softer metal that offers a better "feel" on a shot. The better player, with a more refined and "repeatable" swing, can use this "feel" to shape or control his shot in a way that the beginner can't. The better player doesn't need that larger sweet spot because he can strike the ball dead center with far more consistancy. He trades that off for more control.

The shaft of the club is the next item to look at. What will it be made of? A composite or steel?

The important thing to look at here is your club head velocity. Any typical Sunday golfer will generate a club speed of 80 to 94 mph. With speeds registering lower than that, you ought to think of using a composite style of shaft on your clubs . Slower swing speeds mean less distance on your shots. Not a good thing. And that is where the composite shaft material comes in. The composite shaft will give you longer drives than you will normally get with your low swing speed and steel shafted golf clubs.

For those of you with faster swing speeds, and subsequenlty good distances, steel shafted clubs will give you a lot more control on your shots. This is very similar to the advantages of iron over cast clubs.

Visit your local golf pro shop or look for a store that offers custom work and they will help you to determine your own club head speed and which type of shaft you should use. Or you can buy one of the many swing speed radar devices on the market and clock your speed yourself.

With just these few starting tips, it is usually best if you rent a few different sets of clubs as you play and take note of how each club helps or hinders your game. You are looking to determine your personal strengths and weaknesses. Try the various types and kinds of clubs available to you and, in time, you will be able to narrow in on what will work best for you and which clubs offer the best advantages to improve your golf score.

If you implement these tips and work on them, you will be certain to develop a better drive within a short period of time. Just keep on practicing and working on your improvement. It's only a matter of time before your scores begin to drop.

The key to hitting the ball farther with the modern driver and golf ball (which spins much less off of a flat face than balls of the past) is high launch combined with a low spin rate. Our goal is to get enough spin to achieve lift, while minimizing (hopefully eliminating) drag.

Use Your Body For Power
Every good golfer knows that power comes from the body, not the arms. To learn to power the club with your body instead of your arms and hands, put the club behind the ball at address, with your body in a dead-stop position. Without taking a backswing, try to drag the ball into the air. If you're a player who uses his or her hands to control the club, you'll probably struggle at first. However, you'll quickly find that once you start moving the club with your body, you'll begin to get the ball in the air more consistently. This helps you turn fully through the ball on the downswing.

Leg Angle
The lower leg should angle away from the ball at setup. This helps the body weight move off the heels and into the balls of the feet. This is an athletic position that really works.

Projecting to the target during the swing will not only help create accuracy, but encourage the body motions to swing the clubhead to and through the ball towards the target.

Choose The Right Golf Swing Trainer For Your Game

By: Trent

There is a golf swing trainer for for all your golf needs these days! Want a longer drive? They have one? Need to fix your slice...no problem. Want to improve your golf swing speed...here it is!

Don't get caught in the trap of buying training aids for every occasion. I know my garage has a few, but I called a BIG "timeout" on purchase of every golf infomercial swing trainer. Those commercials are done so well...they have you pulling out your wallet 5 minutes into it.

Pick The Swing Trainer For Your Fault

I know this sounds like a "no-brainer", but listen up! Make sure whatever golf trainer you pick, it really focuses on your swing fault. There are many trainers that say they can cure everything under the sun. Don't do it! Do your research and get one that solves "your problem.

Try Before You Buy

Yes...you can actually give some of these golf swing trainers a try before you buy. Many of the golf stores have returns. These are used training aids. Take it into one of those hitting bays and use it, then hit some balls. Even though you can't see ball flight, you can get an idea of its effectiveness right there on the spot.

Shop Around

Once you've picked the right one, get on the net and do some comparison shopping. You'll be amazed at how many sites sell it quite a bit cheaper than your local store. Just make sure with shipping added, it's a better deal than just driving down and buying it locally.

Use It

Now you've done your research...bought your new golf swing trainer...and have it in your possession. Use it regularly! Don't use it once and put it away! Use it until your swing fault is fixed. This could take many days or months to accomplish, but don't waste your money by using it once or twice and putting it in your "golf garage!"

Golf Drivers

Keeping the clubface angle square to the target after impact breaks down the left wrist, restricting the left arm rotation. These faults set up a chain reaction creating other faults. The lack of arm rotation affects both clubface direction and angle, resulting in both loss of accuracy and distance. Finally, your swing is going at such a high speed that it's a physical impossibilty for you to even attempt to make any adjustments so commit yourself to doing the right things properly in your setup and takeaway because after that things are out of your control.

Short practice sessions regularly are better than one long period. Practice, and good repetition, will teach your muscles to learn to feel - creating your own internal dialog from within that you, and only you, can describe to yourself.

To check your clubhead angle practice the hit and hold drill. This will give you immediate feedback in determining whether the clubface is preceding the hands at impact. Hit a few balls and hold, not allowing your hands to go past waist high on the follow-through. If the left wrist or hand is bent forward this indicates the clubhead was ascending rather than descending at impact. Final note: You cannot cheat this drill, as it will clearly show you where you are at in regards to your angle of approach on your golf swings.

Keeping the left wrist in this flat position will allow the correct movement of the wrists at the top of the backswing, and the starting of the downswing, which is an up and down motion, keeping the clubface maintained in the proper position throughout the swing.
